The Huthmacher and the Bikini Berlin in the 1960s
The tide turned again in the new millennium with the transformation of the Bikinihaus building into BIKINI BERLIN – this played a major part in the unparalleled enhancement of Berlin’s City West area into a prime location for high-end retail and select gastronomy. This development now provisionally comes to a close with the refurbishment of the HUTHMACHER building.
A SIXTIES INSTITUTION: THE CAFÉ HUTHMACHER DANCE VENUE
The HUTHMACHER building was always something of a standout address. Berliners flocked here in droves in 1957 when the Café HUTHMACHER dance venue was opened. Back then, the building was also home to a number of fashion designers, and models presented the latest collections here that had been sewn next door in the Bikinihaus building. After the Berlin Wall was erected in 1961, this quarter around Bahnhof Zoo railway station experienced some checkered times.
